The house-museum dedicated to Grazia Deledda
Who else could we dedicate our very first post to, if not Grazia Deledda — the writer who, through her novels, opened a window onto the rural heart of early 20th-century Sardinia?
Grazia Deledda was born in Nuoro, and the house where she spent her childhood and youth still stands there today. It has been turned into a museum, and it’s definitely worth a visit.
Deledda is best known around the world for her novel Reeds in the Wind (Canne al vento), but if you’re interested — and haven’t already done so — we warmly recommend reading Cosima, her autobiographical novel. (Her full name, in fact, was Grazia Maria Cosima Damiana Deledda.) Cosima tells the story of her early years and adolescence, and visiting the house museum while reading it makes the experience truly special — the story unfolds in those very rooms, letting you step right into the atmosphere of old, rural Sardinia.
To learn more about the author’s work
The publisher Ilisso offers beautiful hardback editions of Deledda’s novels. Years ago, these books could even be purchased inside the museum — perhaps that’s still the case today. In any event, you can also find many of her works, including Cosima, available for free download in PDF or ePub format on the Liber Liber website.
From Tanaunella, Nuoro can be reached by car in about one hour — the perfect little cultural trip for a day away from the beach.
